Marrae Allen Brunner of Las Vegas, Nev., was selected from more than
25,000 entries nationwide (178 from Nevada) to participate in The Photo of the
Century(TM) presented by Kodak. Brunner will represent the year 1958 in The
Photo, which will capture the historic gathering at Independence Hall of 100
Americans, all born on the Fourth of July, one from each year of the century.
Ms. Brunner was born on July 4, 1958 in Pocatello, Idaho. She traveled a
great deal in her younger years with her parents. Her father fought in the
Korean War, was a cook on a U.S. Navy ship, and was a member of the National
Guard Reserves until after Desert Storm, and her mother is a descendent of the
first pioneers who crossed the great plains by covered wagon. Ms. Brunner has
lived in Alaska, Arizona, California, Utah, Washington, and in American Samoa,
where her parents were religious ambassadors.
On her 18th birthday (July, 1976), Ms. Brunner celebrated her personal
freedom and the nation's bicentennial with an outdoor party and a cake with
200 candles. But the most memorable day of her life was her wedding day.
Ms. Brunner was married in 1980, one week after college graduation, and
she moved to her husband's hometown of Las Vegas one year later. A piano
teacher and composer, Ms. Brunner and her husband, Karl, are busy raising nine
children: Kyle (18), Theresa (16), Seth (14), Skyler (13), Karrae (10), Todd
(9), Justin (6), Erika (4), and Shean (2). Their eldest son, Kyle, is
graduating high school in the top 1% of his class at Las Vegas High School,
his father and grandmother's alma mater.
Ms. Brunner said she's "never been past Kansas" and looks forward to
visiting Philadelphia with her husband (and possibly her son, Kyle). She has
a passion for history and wants to explore the sites.
This July 4, 1999, Philadelphia will take a photograph in front of
Independence Hall of 100 Americans born on the Fourth of July, one born each
year from 1900-1999, representing all 50 states. It will even include a baby
born July Fourth morning in Philadelphia. The event will take place during
the city's 10-day Sunoco Welcome America! festival, and is the official kick-
off of Philadelphia's 18-month Millennium celebration.
Each participant and a guest will spend the weekend in Philadelphia from
Friday, July 2-Monday, July 5, 1999. They will receive roundtrip
transportation courtesy of US Airways or Amtrak and will be hosted at The
Warwick Hotel and Towers.
